Paph. spicerianum is one of the most cutest, most charming, absolutely adorable lady slipper orchids. It’s also one of the easiest (and fastest) slipper species to grow.
While all Paph species are unique, some are definitely uniquer than others, and P. spicerianum jostles with a number of other Paphs for that distinctive crown.
It hails from northeast India and Bhutan, but will grow just fine on any American windowsill, and is an ideal orchid species for beginning orchid growers looking to get beyond stuff from the grocery store.
This orchid has a bit of everything going for it:
1) a colorful, distinctive flower with all kinds of undulations and curves
2) Fast-growing (for an orchid, at least… Orchid growth rates should NOT be compared to, say, herbs, weed(s), tomatoes, etc.
3) tolerant of a wide variety of conditions
4) rapid time to specimen size
5) smaller plant, good for windowsills and small growing areas
P. spicerianum is essential to any paph species collection!
It also has a lot of history behind it, being one of the earlier slipper orchids to be discovered. One story tells of an English Army officer stationed in India who, upon hearing of this new orchid discovery, (and being a friend of the Spicer family in England) ventured into the jungle to find it. Of course, he had to fight a man-eating tiger to get to the secluded spot where the plant was growing, and having vanquished his beastly foe and acquiring his orchid prize, he named it after Mrs. Spicer in dear old England. Plants are potted up in 3.5-inch square pots. Please note that P. spicerianum has FLOPPY leaves; they are not as stiff as other orchid leaves, or even other Paph species’ leaves.
