Description
How is it that an orchid with as many virtues as Sarcochilus is still so unknown? This lovely native of Australia (and parts of Asia) is compact, producing floriferous flower spikes on a mature plant in a 3.25-inch square pot. The ivory white flowers display intricate red patterns at the core, and produce a mild fragrance as well. Of course, as a native orchid of Australia, it is very tough and can easily handle near-freezing temperatures or triple-digit heat! This species was first cataloged in 1810, preceding the discovery of Paphiopedilums, Cattleyas, and many other orchid types that are far more common in cultivation today.
Whatever the reasons behind Sarcochilus’ relative obscurity, here is a fantastic opportunity to get an uncommon but lovely, charming, and distinctive orchid that will give any collection more character.
If you’re looking for something beyond the common stuff in orchids, but also a laid-back, easygoing plant, Sarcochilus will satisfy! (PLEASE NOTE: plants are NOT IN BUD/BLOOM when shipped.)
