If orchids grow in Middle Earth, then Psychopsis Mendenhall must be straight outta Mordor, cuz its flower is the spittin’ image of the Eye of Sauron. The thin, pointy petals look like the horns on the Dark Tower from where the Eye of Sauron searches Middle Earth, and the intense orange and red colors is a perfect match for that fiery eye.
Psychopsis Mendenhall is one of the most impressive, and definitely one of the most recognizable, hybrids in the larger Oncidium group. The appearance of the plant itself is very un-orchid-like — its leaves show lovely red patterns that are found almost nowhere else except within the Psychopsis genus. The shape of the flower is bizarre, but it is clearly an orchid, and an experienced eye would readily conclude that the Oncidium bloom characteristics shine through. The color of Psychopsis Mendenhall is something else — the intense flame-like colors and pattern of the blooms make this a must-have for any orchid collection, especially in a world awash with Phalaenopsis hybrids cloned by the millions. Yes, Phals are beautiful, but all too common; what we need to see more of are the uncommon, even strange, beauties of Orchid-Earth.
