Dendrobium linawianum is a fascinating orchid native to Taiwan and southern China. It makes a lovely flower, very similar to the ever-popular Den nobile, but its most attractive feature is its translucent pseudobulbs. Think of a gummy worm candy, and you’ll get good idea of what these translucent canes look like! On a large plant, you can have dozens of flowers open simultaneously producing a fantastic, fragrant display. As intriguing as these translucent canes are, please note they’re most translucent when the canes/bulbs are young and will turn more opaque as the bulb ages. Den. linawianum is easy to grow, but you’ll want to avoid temps below 45 F. This kind of Dendrobium flowers on leafless canes, so don’t be alarmed when the canes start dropping leaves — it’s all natural and a good sign!
