Cymbidium Australian Midnight

Cym Australian Midnight is a primary hybrid made from crossing the species canaliculatum and atropurpureum. The flowers are nearly black, and have an almost menacing look to them. The fragrance is reminiscent of coconut oil (although some noses may beg to differ). The pendulous, cascading flower spike can carry over 10+ individual flowers, so when your plant grows to specimen size, it might have dozens, or even hundreds of blooms open at once.

The plants we’re offering are still seedling-size, so a good three to five years away from reaching Blooming Size. While they’re easy to grow, they’re not really suitable at this size for beginning orchid growers; only experienced growers with the proper conditions, expectations, and most importantly, patience, should get Cymbidiums of this size.

Plants will be shipped in-pot in 2.25-inch square pots with fine bark. You should continue to grow them in these pots with the bark for at least 18 months. They DO NOT need to be repotted. In fact, this is a huge misconception amongst new and intermediate orchid growers, that orchids must be re-potted immediately. This might be true for some Phalaenopsis that have been languishing in Home Depot for six months in low-quality moss, but for most orchids (and definitely almost all of the plants we offer), you don’t need to repot for at least six months, unless the plant is bursting out of its pot, or it is a rescue plant.

Cymbidiums are very easy to grow (see below for more info), but at the seedling stage, it helps a lot if you can keep humidity high around the plant. Putting a clear transparent plastic storage box (the type you can get from Target/WalMart/Home Depot) will help tremendously, and keep these plants, and virtually all orchids, very happy.
