Dendrobium smilliae is a truly fascinating, and impressive, orchid native to Australia and Papua New Guinea. Its individual flowers definitely look like many of the Dendrobiums from that part of the world, but what is striking is the blooms form a beehive-like clump unlike any of the more common or even uncommon Dendrobiums out there. This plant can get big, with canes reaching four feet long (and probably more given the right conditions). You can keep it at a more manageable size in a 5-inch pot once it hits Blooming Size, but a well-grown plant is likely to grow out of that in a season or two. This species is very sensitive to colder temperatures, however, so you’ll need to avoid exposing it to temps below 50 F for prolonged periods (i.e., more than a few nights in a row), as even a large plant will get stressed and die. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path that is easy to grow and very impressive, Den smilliae is a great choice.
