DESCRIPTION:
Epidendrum porpax is a cute MINIATURE orchid perfect for the terrarium or those in-between spaces created by round pots pushed together on your crowded orchid shelf or windowsill. After all, if you’ve got space, why let it go to waste? This little guy looks very much like our top-selling Papua New Guinea species, Mediocalcar decoratum, although it hails from nearly 10,000 miles away in the jungles of Colombia and Venezuela. One of the distinguishing features of Epidendrum porpax is its near-translucent flowers. These star-shaped blooms have a deep chocolate lip and petals that can appear almost translucent. This orchid grows out horizontally and does best in a shallow pot with New Zealand Sphagnum Moss. A well-grown specimen can eventually look like a big Chia pet!
How to grow: the best medium to use is New Zealand Sphagnum Moss. This is a “creeping” type of plant that will tend to grow horizontally. It can also be grown mounted with sphagnum moss (be sure to mist and water frequently). Water 2X per week. Avoid direct sun, bright shady conditions work best. Avoid temps below 40 F for prolonged periods.
